Glimpsing into a futuristic world through Lenovo's transparent laptop

Lenovo has unveiled its latest innovative device, the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. This futuristic laptop features a 17.3-inch MicroLED display with up to 55% transparency, transitioning from opaque to translucent as its pixels illuminate. Although its practical applications remain uncertain, Lenovo suggests it could benefit digital artists by enabling them to sketch while viewing the environment behind the screen. Additionally, the laptop boasts a flat touch keyboard that transforms into a drawing tablet, catering to creative professionals. However, challenges such as resolution limitations and usability issues persist, indicating that the device is still in development. Lenovo aims to spark public discourse on potential uses for this concept, anticipating that its technology may evolve into a consumer-ready product within the next five years.

Razer takes on Alienware with Razer Blade gaming laptop..

Alienware has a new challenger. Razer, the gaming peripherals company known for its hardcore gaming mice and accessories, has made the move into creating it’s first gaming laptop: the Razer Blade. The new laptop will boast powerful specs housed in an aluminium chassis, an “all-new revolutionary user interface” and plenty of power for those keen to prove their gaming and healthy bank balance credentials. According to the company, the 17-inch Full HD screen touting Razer Blade is so called because it measures 22mm thick and weighs 3.1kg. It’s not just about a thin design. The Razer Blade certainly packs a powerful punch: a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 2640M processor and a Nvidia GeForce GT 555M featuring Optimus and a 2GB dedicated GDDR5 video memory graphics processor. Other specs include 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 Memory, built-in HD webcam, a 320GB 7200rpm SATA hard drive and Wi-Fi.
The Razer Blade also features a new interface called the Switchblade User Interface that is comprised of 10 dynamic adaptive tactile keys for easier access of in-game commands and an LCD capable of two modes: one mode that displays in-game information when a mouse is in use and another mode that functions as an ultra-sensitive, multi-touch panel designed for gaming on the go. “The Razer Blade was designed to give gamers a laptop they could truly use on the go,” said Min-Liang Tan, CEO and Creative Director, Razer, suggesting that you can’t with other systems like the Alienware range from Dell. Asus unleashes ultra-thin U36 notebook..

These laptops just keep on getting thinner, with the latest to enter the super slim brigade arriving in the form of the Asus U36.
The 19mm thick magnesium alloy netbook features clever technology that means it keeps itself clean, so you can transport it anywhere you go. Dirt, water and fingerprint marks are repelled by the laptops nanometer coating. Mucky-pups will also like the seamless chiclet keyboard which keeps those crumbs at bay.
The laptop itself features something called the ASUS Super Hybrid Engine that allows for USB 3.0 toggling. Nvidia graphics with Optimus technology, a standard voltage i5 processor and 13.3 inch HD tft display make up the rest of the U36's hardware specs.
Asus has managed to preserve battery life despite the standard voltage i5, squeezing an 11.5 hours out of the laptop. This is partly due to a dual heat pipe design that keeps the laptop cool and small in size.
500GB of storage and a 5 in 1 card reader also means you can back up snaps or other media on the go.
Available in either silver or black and priced in at £699, the U36 is set to hit stores before the end of this month.

Ten Highlights of Mac OS X Lion for Apple Macbook..

As we all know, Apple has developed iOS for the iPhone. Based on the system of Mac OS X, and now it brings the best to the iPad to your Mac with Mac OS X Lion, available in summer 2011.

Highlight 1: Newly Multi Touch Gestures
Multi-Touch gestures make everything you do on iPad easy and intuitive. The latest Mac OS X Lion brings more handy ways to interact with your Mac. Enjoy more fluid and realistic gesture responses, including rubber-band scrolling, page and image zoom, and full-screen swiping. In Mac OS X Lion, every swipe, pinch, and scroll looks and feels more responsive and lifelike.

Highlight 2: Launchpad — A Home for Your Apps
Launchpad gives users instant access to your apps in iPad style. Just click the Launchpad icon in your Dock and then get a full-screen view of all your apps in Launchpad. It takes just a swipe to see multiple pages of apps, and you can arrange them any way you like by dragging icons to different locations or by grouping apps in folders. In fact, it’s just about as fast as keeping an Application folder in your dock, and easier to glance at too. The Launchpad can also be enhanced by adding directories so you can find anything you need in just a few clicks. And when you download an app from the Mac App Store, it automatically appears in Launchpad.

Highlight 3: Full-screen Apps
Another wonderful feature for users is the full-screen app views for Mac OS X Lion. It’s an idea that fits some apps much better than others — iPhoto. In iPhoto, users can see all Events at one time in full-screen view. One click for an app in full screen, tree fingers swipe to switch to another. Again, just like you view your Apps on the iPad or iPhone, Full Screen view of an App really makes it stand out more for great functionality.

Highlight 4: Mission Control
Mission Control is actually a new Expose, integrating the Dock, Dashboard and views from all open apps, both windowed and full screen. With a simple swipe, your desktop zooms out to Mission Control, and you can get to anything you see in Mission Control with just one click.

Highlight 5: Versions
Simply put, this is Time Machine for files. Versions records the evolution of a document as you create it. Mac OS X Lion automatically creates a version of the document each time you open it and every hour while you’re working on it. This way, when you realize you’ve made a mistake along the way, you can most easily slide through the different versions of your work and revert anything you want by copying and pasting it in place.

Highlight 6: Resume
Nothing fancy, but very useful. Whenever you quit and relaunch an app, Resume opens it precisely the way you left it. Everything is persistent — your files, folders and applications are preserved exactly as you left them. So you never have to start from scratch again.

Highlight 7: Mail 5
Just like Mail on iPad, Mail 5 in Mac OS X Lion features a new layout that takes advantage of the widescreen display on your Mac. You’ve got a left column with all your messages and a preview pane on the right — threaded messages are numbered in the new conversation view, which is a dead-simple idea that works really well. Search has also been dramatically improved with easy query-stacking options, and folders can be added to a new bookmark bar-style Mailbox Bar at the top of the screen.

Highlight 8: Mac App Store
Just like shopping the App Store on iPad, the Mac App Store offers endless possibilities for browsing and purchasing apps. Newly purchased apps install in one step and appear right in the new Launchpad. It is the easiest way to install and keep applications up to date.

Highlight 9: Lion Server
Instead of having to buy it separately, Lion Server is now part of Mac OS X Lion, making it more mainstream and available for the masses. Manage users and groups easily. Even monitor performance with graphs.

Highlight 10: AirDrop
One of Lion’s niftiest new features is AirDrop, which allows quick and easy file transfers between WiFi-equipped Macs. Just click the AirDrop icon in the Finder sidebar, and your Mac automatically discovers other people nearby who are using AirDrop. Swapping files is as simple as dragging and confirming. Also, AirDrop doesn’t require setup or special settings.

Lenovo IdeaPad U1– a laptop with a detachable tablet screen..

CES 2010 hasn't even started yet and already Lenovo has unwrapped its latest computing concept at the pre-show warm-up CES Unveiled. The computing company has shown off something called the Lenovo IdeaPad – a laptop which comes complete with a detachable tablet screen. The Lenovo IdeaPad U1 is certainly an intriguing concept. It calls itself a 'hybrid notebook' and is essentially two devices, with the tablet part of the IdeaPad working completely independently of the notebook cradle. Screen-wise, it's 11.6 inches and LED backlit, and while Lenovo were tight-lipped over what other specs the IdeaPad U1 has, they did let us have a peak at an as-yet-not-finalised specification sheet which noted the tablet part of the machine used a Qualcomm Arm 1GHz Snapdragon processor, with the main notebook powered by a Intel Core 2 Duo processor. In total the whole thing will weigh 1.61lbs, but if you fancy just carrying the tablet around then this will only weigh you down 0.7lbs. Other specs we managed to glean from Lenova are that the IdeaPad will incorporate 4GB of DDR3 Ram, house 2x USB ports and an eSata port. Interestingly, once the tablet is freed from the notebook body, you can hook the notebook up to an external monitor and it will work just fine. When the tablet is removed, what you are left with is a see-through red Perspex screen.
Another cool feature is that the device will know to automatically change your web surfing from full web to mobile web when the tablet is set free. Although the Snapdragon processor is more than capable of supporting full web, it is a handy little feature to have. Given the size of the device it's no wonder that it uses a resistive screen, but we tried it and there wasn't too much forced prodding to be done. Lenova has certainly hit onto and intriguing concept with the IdeaPad U1. While it may not be the only tablet device the company releases at CES, it's a great compromise for those who want to try out a tablet but don't won't to rid themselves of the notebook completely. Another compromise may be the price. Looking to be around the $999 mark when it is released in the US in the second half of the year, expect a UK release date of the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 later in 2010, with pounds matching dollars.

3D Vaio by Sony..

Sony has had a couple of 3D-capable devices unveiled at IFA Berlin. One of them is its 3D VAIO laptop which is still a prototype and planed to release in Spring of 2011. The laptop that was shown off at the IFA is based on the current Sony’s VAIO F-series 16-inch notebook. But Sony claims that the eventual production models will be different from the demoed models. The Sony’s 3D laptop requires you to wear a pair of full active shutter “frame sequential” glasses and be at a dedicated viewing position to enjoy watching the best 3D contents in full HD 1080p quality on the laptop’s screen. The 3D screen of the VAIO prototype is able to rapidly cycle between left and right eye, and has blank screens between each shot for the left and right eye – which effectively outputs 240 frames per second to match the normal 60fps refresh rate.
Sony wraps off its new line of affordable priced notebooks in chic new colors—3D VAIO E Series. Sony 3D VAIO E Series laptop are designed with personalization in mind, spectrum of available colors, just like HP revitalized its Mini Series. Inviting finishes and subtle patterns will help one in choosing a style that all own. Interior is striking with clear coat palm rests that match lid & available colorful keyboard skins to spice up things. At “IFA 2010 tech Fair“, Sony unveiled 3D Vaio E Series notebook including a button, which when pressed, will convert 2D images to 3D with 3 unique hardware buttons – VAIO, WEB and ASSIST. Sony company plans to launch 3D Vaio laptops in early 2011.
“3D Vaios will debut next spring,” Howard Stringer, Sony chief executive, said in a press conference touting 3D technology and Sony’s commitment to it. Easy, quick transfer and store data to peripheral devices utilizing notebook eSATA/ USB port, 3 convenient USB ports. Select models has Bluetooth technology, enabling peripherals such as wireless mouse to be utilized without tying up unit ports. Vaio 3D laptops has similar 3D tech to Sony Bravia TVs including Sony “Black Frame Insertion” which gives viewer extra clear & super sharp results by inserting black frames between color images to separate them. Sony 3D Vaio prototype has 16-inch display screen. Sony is claiming that its 3D laptops will feature extremely fast response “LCD screens” displaying up-to 240fps, giving better 3D imaging. A built-in webcam with face tracking technology, microphone and video chat with friends, family and colleagues. Sony 3D VAIO E Series notebook will be available in 5 colors — Coconut White, Caribbean Green, Iridescent Blue, Hibiscus Pink & Lava Black. VAIO E Series notebook will cost for about $700.

Laptop tracks gaze, taking eye-tracking out of lab..

It tracks your gaze and figures out where you're looking on the screen. That means, among other things, that you can play a game where you burn up incoming asteroids with a laser that hits where you look. In another demonstration this week, the computer scrolled a text on the screen in response to eye movements, sensing when the reader reached the end of the visible text.
In the future, a laptop like this could make the mouse cursor appear where you're looking, or make a game character maintain eye contact with you, according to Tobii Technology Inc., the Swedish firm that's behind the tracking technology. The eye tracker works by shining two invisible infrared lights at you. Two hidden cameras then look for the "glints" off your eyeballs and reflections from each retina. It needs to be calibrated for each person. It works for people with or without eyeglasses.
Rather than a replacement for the traditional mouse and keyboard or the newer touch screen, the eye-tracking could be a complement, making a computer faster and more efficient to use, said Barbara Barclay, general manager of Tobii's Analysis Solutions business. Tobii has been making eye-tracking devices for researchers and the disabled for nearly a decade. The laptop is its way of showing that eye-tracking could expand beyond those niches, Barclay said, calling it an "idea generator."
The laptop is made by Lenovo Corp., and incorporates Tobii's eye-tracking cameras in a "hump" on the cover, making the entire package about twice as thick as a regular laptop. But future, commercial versions can be slimmer and are perhaps two years away, Barclay said.
Lenovo and Tobii made 20 of the laptops and planned to demonstrate them at the CeBIT technology trade show in Hanover, Germany, on Tuesday.
Tobii's current, standalone eye-trackers cost tens of thousands of dollars, but Barclay said the cost of adding consumer-level eye-tracking to a commercial laptop could be much less. New ways to use computers have been proliferating in recent years. Touch screens are becoming popular on smart phones and tablet computers such as the iPad. Nintendo Corp.'s Wii game console brought motion-sensing technology to the masses. Microsoft Corp. released an accessory for its Xbox games console last year that uses an infrared camera to sense the movement of bodies in three dimensions.

Motorola Atrix Laptop Dock as expensive as a laptop – What.?

Laptop Dock unleashes the computing power of the MOTOROLA ATRIX 4G.The webtop app launches automatically when your phone is docked to get all the ease of a sleek laptop computer and the capabilties of your phone in one smart package.Super thin so it travels easily.

AT&T has announced the pricing of the Motorola Atrix (the standard $199), but also of the Atrix Laptop Dock, which is priced at $499.99 as a stand-alone device. The Motorola Atrix is a powerful dual-core phone that has a unique ability to run a full-blown Linux operating system when connected to the Laptop Dock, or the Multimedia Dock from Motorola. The Laptop dock is a “shell” with a display and battery which is ready to receive the Atrix as the “brain”.
While the idea is very good, the pricing is not. The combination of a $199 smartphone with a $499 creates a $700 device that has the bulk of a small laptop, but most definitely not the performance and the software compatibility of a $499 Windows laptop. Palm tried this before with the Foleo, and even if the Atrix Laptop Dock is cooler, its pricing will prove to be its demise. We liked the previous $150 rumor much better, although it was proven to be unrealistic. What do you think? Is $499 too high for the Atrix Laptop Dock.
AT&T has announced that the pre-sales for the upcoming Motorola Atrix on Feb 13. The powerful Android 2.2 handset will be priced at the usual $199.99, with a new two-year contract.  If you want to get it from a retail store, you will have to wait until March 6. AT&T will market the Atrix as a 4G device, but doesn’t mention LTE anywhere in its press release. Instead, AT&T will be using HSPA+, a technology that we consider to be 3.5G at best (AT&T disagrees) when the Motorola Atrix launches.  AT&T plans to launch LTE, a “real” 4G network, later this year – possibly with the next-generation iPhone as the spearhead.
For customers who want to take advantage of the unique extensions of the Motorola Atrix, like the Laptop Dock, can get a bundle with the phone (2-yr contract) and the laptop dock for $499.99 – after a $100 mail-in rebate. The Laptop Dock costs $499 (!) as a stand-alone purchase. The Multimedia Dock that turns your Atrix into a computer with a keyboard and mouse costs $189.99. Check our Motorola Atrix preview at CES 2011 and if you’re on a budget, you still have hope with the lower price at Costco (rumor).
